Digital Hearing Aids

Our hearing is a much undervalued sense until we start to lose it and then we realise just how important it is. Sudden hearing is loss is very rare, for most of us it is a gradual decline that often goes unnoticed for quite awhile.

But at some point there's that realisation that our hearing loss has reached a level that is impacting on our daily life. The TV is turned up loud, as is the radio. And when people are speaking you end up guessing rather than hearing what they're saying. So why don't people tackle the problem earlier?

There is a definite prejudice about wearing hearing aids. Most people will accept that they need to wear glasses and do so without a second thought. But for some reason the idea of a hearing aid seems very off putting.

Perhaps some of this is to with the old fashioned devices we remember from years ago. Big, bulky and very noticeable they also seem to whistle and screech and need a lot of readjusting. But technology has come on leaps and bounds since then.

These days you have a choice of analogue and digital hearing aids. Analogue is based on older technology that amplifies all sound at the same level. If you're in a noisy environment then having the background noise at the same level as the person speaking to you can make it difficult to hear what's being said.

Digital hearing aids are smarter and are able to reduce the background noise levels so allowing you to hear the conversation more clearly. And this is what really sets digital hearing aids apart from their older counterparts. Digital technology allows for amplification of sound without the usual distortion.

The other important thing about digital technology is its size. Things don't need to be big to be effective these days. For those of you whose hearing loss isn't too significant and only need basic features then you can buy completely in canal digital hearing aids. These are virtually invisible.

For something a bit bigger there is the in the canal aid which is still very small but protrudes slightly from the ear canal. The next size up is the in the ear hearing aid which has to be moulded to fit.

Even the behind the ear hearing aids are much smaller than they used to be and with modern styling look very like the Bluetooth headsets that many people use today with their mobile phones.

Digital hearing aids can also come with extras including remote controls to easily adjust the volume levels. Aids fitted with T-coils will also allow you to use induction loop technology as well as use phones designed for hearing aid users. Some hearing aids also offer directional microphones that allow you to pick up sound from a specific direction which is useful when you are in a group of people who all chatting at the same time as at dinner party.

However the first thing you need to is have your hearing tested. That way the specific areas of hearing loss can be located and a suitable type of hearing aid selected. Don't avoid using a hearing aid because of vanity, digital technology means you can restore much of your hearing and still look stylish.
